Elevating Conversations: Insights from an Exquisite Home Gathering!
Last night, we hosted a gathering at home, inviting some important business partners and executives. Among them was Mr. Kame, a Japanese general manager. The dishes on the table were undoubtedly exquisite, and we even prepared one male and one female hairy crab per person for a truly indulgent feast. As I rarely attend social events, my exposure to the world is limited. I had no idea about the significance of the guests, so when I arrived home, I had already changed into a complete set of sportswear and slippers, while everyone else was dressed in suits and ties.
I was seated in the midst of them, but I couldn't understand their conversation in Japanese. One of the bosses was known to be sociable and well-versed in various languages, including Mandarin, Taiwanese, English, and Japanese. Their conversation covered a wide range of topics, including golf, history, languages, and even some risqué subjects. I realized that individuals at their level, who navigate social activities, need more than just professional depth. They require breadth of knowledge and multilingual skills. They often emphasize that they are not necessarily professionals, and even joke that as long as they can speak fluently, they can communicate anywhere. However, when trying to converse with a Japanese person in Japanese and inadvertently inserting Taiwanese phrases like "yì-sia̍t-kím-kak (a lifetime's work)" or "liāng-tsí tuà-tiāu (approximately)," it definitely perplexes the Japanese listener. They mentioned their particular enjoyment of driving to nearby scenic spots to seek tranquility and explore ancient sites, without sounding like they are reciting profound knowledge. As a younger generation, I could only listen and wonder if reaching their level requires possessing these qualities.
